A Penny Shines

Gather yourself already and give a fuck
No one here to shine your penny
Wish on a rainbow for your good luck

See the pieces on the floor?
Pick yourself up, man
You ask for help say you can’t take no more
That your future is frayed
And you parlay, wax on for mercy oh lord

What have you learned from this decade
if not that man is a resilient weapon
Loved ones passed
Illness fraught
Lovers parted
Friends vanished
And here we are, babe, broken hearted
But still standing

Bombs ruefully color the sky in the East
While rainbows paint ours here for us to feast
Yet most go ignored
Yeah they go ignored
Just like bird formations
Clouds hanging ever so gently above our jaded L.A. hilltops
Yes, it’s smog-ridden L.A.
But, I will take it any day over seeing soldiers slain
Yet you email, text, phone, post and complain

Gather yourself already and look up
Look around
Friends that are left are a few
But their goodness is abound
I may not be there to hold your hand
But a hand I will lend when I see you
For once getting on
Humming birds and butterflies they appear
out of the blue
And only you know this is true

So there friend, you are not alone
But, you are you and you sabotage
You deprecate
Cast a shadow with the smallest of stone
Enough
Open up and let go
Beauty is around us
I love you
But for now I go
Until you, for yourself see
That even a penny can shine on its own

If Only For Today

I wanna give you kisses
Like the ones that don’t come true everyday
Hold you like someone who has never hurt me
Embrace the possibilities
Or simply get lost in your embrace
I don’t want plans
I don’t want promises
I don’t want to discuss this
I want your sheer longing
To hear you say you thought of me all week
Whether your longing for now is or isn’t skin deep
Baby, you thought of me
And that is all I need
Baby, you have champagne
I’ll make the chocolate covered strawberries
And we stay up making love
So be it, let’s talk about the mundane
I wanna give you kisses like I said
Ain’t it funny how strangers can meet
And make each other feel loved
Even if love is not what they’re in yet?
Ain’t it funny we can severely hurt those we claim
To in love be
Yet we destroy, betray them, hurt them and wonder
Well I ever be right again?
Will I love again?
Will anyone love me?
Baby, thanks for the kisses
Never mind these loose cannons firing in my head
You are one of the few reasons
Why I am okay,
if only for today

“Haven’s Happenstance: Songs With A Message Series”

Hello my #Tumblr #friends, thanks for your messages, I’m better. Had a little bump in the road, but it was a good test in this positive momentum of mine.

In the last few weeks, I’ve had some good lessons about people, and I’m starting to realize that, for the most part, I don’t think we set out to hurt each other. Rather, it’s in the manner in which we carry out our situations – sometimes more careless than not – that people get hurt. And what many of us don’t realize is that it is never, ever too late to reach out to that person that you hurt, that is confused by your actions or simply misunderstood and tell them that you value them – whether it’s the short amount of time you spent together laughing, whether it’s their good intentions or just the fact that they will be good at or with someone or something else. The end result here is: positivity. Leaving things on a positive note.

Let’s not let people walk out of our lives feeling crummy. It’s the one super power we all have – to make others feel respected, valued, thought of, noticed, acknowledged. It’s so simple and can be done with a sincere, ‘I wish you the best, you’re a good person.’ And so with that comes my new Haven’s Happenstance song series – Songs With A Message: over the week I’ll profile songs that have a positive, feel good message to them. Songs that somehow have been surrounding me for the last few weeks – whether I heard them at a café in Italy as I was having a bummed out moment, or they came on the radio as I was tearing up on a drive home, or songs that are just in my arsenal of “Come on Haven, get on up and feel good. Life is short, but oh so beautiful, don’t waste a second of it.”  Hope you like, chin up, xo – haven.

Today was kind of a crummy day… Sitting at a chill loungey place having a gin & tonic trying to get over it, I noticed this gorgeous painting which perked me up. Not only is it grandiose in person, but I began to notice all the life in it and so I thought… ‘surely my day isn’t as bad as most out there.’ Okay seriously, as I’m writing this, my all-time favorite artist comes on, my darling Ryan Adams. Now if that’s not a sign of good things, I don’t know what is, as we know Ry is not the type of artist that just comes on at a cool loungey place in London, sigh.

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Party Series” (or What’s Makin Haven Feel Even Better Now ;) #Party Hard” by Andrew W. K. What better song to kick off this series of fun, feel good party songs than with one of the ULTIMATES by the ever always party animal AWK- I love his energy and unapologetic craziness.

And this graphic spoke to me as the perfect image to kick off the party series because it’s a philosophy I believe in.  Now more than ever I try to live by it- because life is just too precious, beautiful and short to not do what we want and what makes us happy. Let’s party to that!

“Haven’s Happenstance: The Party Series or What’s Makin Haven Feel Even Better Now.”

Hello my Tumblr friends - sorry I have been MIA. I arrived to London for work, went on a little escapade and I am now refueled and filled-a-plenty with some feel-good good-feeling ‘something, something,’- and that’s about all you’re gettin ;D. BUT, if you know me and know what I write about here at HavenStory, well I think you can venture to say: I am happy for now. And the road to one day again finding love looks bright- most probably not now and not him, but the possibilities have proven to be, well, fun to get to know.

Enough with the riddles - a Haven’s Happenstance series is overdue and we get started now with: “The Party Series” (or What’s Makin Haven Feel Even Better Now.) Because life is good when you have looked inward, taken a valiant step to get out of a bad situation despite the fact that it may get lonely, but you are surrounded by people that care for you, and the cherry on top is conquering that bucket list that some are too afraid to get started. For 2011, I’m more than halfway mine. Thank goodness ‘cause the year is about to end. I hope you’ve gotten in your groove too, and if not, well bottom’s up to 2012. Cheers! - haven

The Journey

In a lacking moment of brilliance
I threw myself over
the perils of longing
ignoring my instincts
acknowledging my foolishness
relentlessly moving forward
as only a rebel would

I fell hard

To my astonishment
my soul proved to be stronger
than any part of my body
my brain was shattered to pieces,
but who needed it anyway?
for it was my heart that protected me along the way

I laughed hard

As only a child would
in a matter of seconds
I was surrounded by thoughts
generated by my malfunctioning brain
and I could’ve sworn God was in front of me

I cried hard

To my solidarity
I held on tight
dreaming up phantoms
that held my hand along the way through his kingdom

I prayed hard

As only a human would
on her way to meet
the real answer to all of life

I listened hard

To my fear
and tried to forgive myself for all the pain I may have caused

I loved hard

As only a girl would upon being held by God for the very first time.

(I lost a whole box of poems… been writing since I was about 12. I found a few this week though- this one is about 10 years old. I was tempted to edit it, but decided to leave it as is, a moment marked in time. It’s funny how what we write about reflects what’s happening in our lives at that time…)

“Haven’s Happenstance: The Soothing Oldies Series”

I was about to start a series on fun, party songs…. but, who am I kidding: I am depressed. LOVE-STARVED. Sad. Down in the dumps. Drained. But, I try not to bring you sad songs. There are no sad songs, really, only the way we feel when we seek certain songs to soothe our soul. And so I bring you “The Soothing Oldies Series,” because for me every time I hear a good diddy from the 50’s or 60’s, well, I feel like I’m getting a hug from an old friend, and I never want to let go. Here’s to better days and love all around.

A half smile, but I mean it…

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Storyteller Series:” “Ten Cent Pistol” by The Black Keys. Art by Christel Bangsgaard via ssdmmfr.tumblr.com

I‘m a little late on the song of the day today… But, it’s still Thursday in some parts of the world, so here it goes. After a few emotional storytelling songs, and my own little panic attack at work today, I thought I’d lighten things up and profile the cool cat sounds of The Black Keys. Ten Cent Pistol warns us not to mess with a scorned woman, and reminds us how sweet revenge can indeed be… ahh I can taste it, yes I can…

“Well, he ran around
Late at night
Holding hands
And making light
Of everything
That came before
But there she was
Behind the door

She hit them with her ten cent pistol
Because they ruined her name
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
And they’ve never been the same

There’s nothing worse
In this world
Than payback from a
Jealous girl
The laws of man
Don’t apply
When blood gets in
A woman’s eye

Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
Because they ruined her name
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
And they’ve never been the same

Stars did fall
Thunder rolled
Bugs crawled back
In their holes
The couple screamed
But far too late
Cause a jealous heart
Did retaliate”

Haven’s Happenstance: The Storyteller Series:” This week I profile songs that tell stories of love, death, crime, luck. What does this have to do with love, which I normally write about, you ask? Well, everything: The quickest way to my heart is through a good story.
