These are the days of Marmont
Sky Bar and Trocadero
Where men compete and win with more dinero
A shrinking conscience balanced only by a growing erection
Where girls compete with equally shrinking character
Crushed by deception
Growing with lackluster personalities
In a town notorious for being ready for its close up
And ne’er an eyebrow raised for certain inequalities
Best known for a treasure trove of dreams
Yet still some always give up it seems
That may be Hollywood to some
But, not L.A.
My city shines and spreads it wings
Like the angels it eponymously claims
The real shining lights are not those on Sunset
Nor those dotting the mcmansion on the Hollywood Hills
Of that mogul gracing the latest cover of Celebrity
The real lights shine from parks - Griffith onto McArthur and Echo
From the factories of American Apparel
to the Mozza kitchen
Round the L.A. Mission
To pristine mansion marble floors
Scrubbed so, so sterile
Lights in some eyes have gone out
At Olive View
And LA. County jail
At the factories of Wonder Bread
Or Vermont and 92nd street
Where yours truly was raised
But, not in this girl
Not yet
Not ever
From the RTD to SAMOHI
From the Fairfax Market
And the now weekly jaunts across Mulllholland
Runyon and Fryman
This girl here
Is in touch and connected
Eyes lit brightly
Feet firmly planted
This girl here
She has learned
take nothing
nothing for granted

#Runyon Cyn, #Hollywood. The view was scrumptious today, running the trails to the likes of #Muse ‘Map of the Problematique’, Chemical Brothers ‘Dig Your Own Hole’ and Rage Against The Machine, oh yeah. Bring it!
#Hollywood (Runyon Canyon). Sunsets, sunrises this L.A. view is gorgeous no matter. My weekly Friday evening run, always feels incredible, cheers!
Driving on La Brea looking at all the quirky, cool home decor shops, on a beautiful clear L.A. day listening to The #Sundays, full of hope & wonder. Life is good. Happy Friday, Tumblr’ers
Jr. Walker & The All Stars “What Does It Take” (To Win Your Love). Ahh, the sweet sounds of #Motown and the late 60’s. It continues to rain here in L.A. and this plus Shuggie Otis, well, you get a taste of my current playlist. kisses -haven
Shuggie Otis “Strawberry Letter 23.” It’s a rainy, moody day in Los Angeles, and this Shuggie here is the mood I’m in: Sweet, tender, loving, care, but no one with whom (I want) to share…. shucks - haven

A morning run in the dewy hills of L.A. Hello body- it took 30-some yrs for me to honor and respect you. I’m not giving you up or giving you back. You are the vessel that holds this wonderful human spirit and mind of mine.
A fine glass (a bottle, really) of Mourvèdre tonight- a wine I hadn’t heard of ‘til London, but my L.A. pal like mine in London knew his way around wine. And most importantly: incredible company tonight. New friends and possibilities. I am constantly reminded that no matter how stressful life can get, I am BLESSED. Salud mi cariño!
At the #Portishead concert in L.A., couples, couples everywhere, kissing, hugging, holding hands and me? Well, I’m in awe, loving their love for each other. Then, outta nowhere this proposal, how awesome is that!? Let’s celebrate love. xo
An awesome run, a horse & a barn overlooking the #Hollywood city lights, only in #LA
Today’s “Haven Happenstance” #song - “The Storyteller Series:” “Sometime Around Midnight” by The #Airborne Toxic Event.
It’s nice to say that one of my favorite ‘indie-though-now-well-established’ bands is local from L.A., Los Feliz to be exact. I’ve yet to see these guys live, but I love their sound and lyrics. Sometime Around Midnight tells the story of a guy who still longs for his ex and happens to run into her at a bar, he - a bit drunk - becomes mesmerized, and those feelings of wanting come right back. Sing it boys!
“And it starts
Sometime around midnight
Or at least that’s when you lose yourself
For a minute or two
As you stand
Under the bar lights
And the band plays some song about forgetting yourself for a while
And the piano’s this melancholy soundtrack to her smile
And that white dress she’s wearing, you haven’t seen her
For a while
But you know
That she’s watching
She’s laughing, she’s turning
She’s holding her tonic like a cross
The room suddenly spinning, she walks up and asks how you are
So you can smell her perfume
You can see her lying naked in your arms
And so there’s a change
In your emotions
And all of these memories come rushing like feral waves to your mind
Of the curl of your bodies, like two perfect circles entwined
And you feel hopeless, and homeless, and lost in the haze of the wine
And she leaves
With someone you don’t know
But she makes sure you saw her, she looks right at you and bolts
As she walks out the door
Your blood boiling, your stomach in ropes
And then your friends say “What is it? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
And you walk
Under the streetlights
And you’re too drunk to notice that everyone’s staring at you
You don’t care what you look like
The world is falling around you
You just have to see her
You know that she’ll break you in two”
“Haven’s Happenstance: The Storyteller Series:” This week I profile songs that tell stories of love, death, crime, luck. What does this have to do with love, which I normally write about, you ask? Well, everything: The quickest way to my heart is through a good story.
Fryman Canyon looked beautiful today, I even caught a heart in the sun’s rays ;)
And this is a grand #LA view to end a hike/run to. And yes, to address the sign, I sure am ;)
My city of angels, Runyon Canyon, possibly the world’s best view to run to.
Crash into me
Life is sweetest when I’m out exploring. Recently, I’ve been taken with the many stair walks across L.A. (I don’t mean stadium type ones, but ones that used to be a vital artery across neighborhoods years ago.) The discovery element and sense of adventure is like no other. At once liberating and withdrawn. These pics are from Castellammare in the Pacific Palisades area near Malibu. My playlist that day was a mix of a bunch of stuff like MGMT, The Temper Trap and Martin Solveig & Dragonette. And speaking of liberating - there’s one song that just literally makes me feel like Peter Pan, happy, giddy, I can fly dammit! And blast it I did while trekking up & down, gawking at these gorgeous views: Stereophonics - Dakota. Go!
