Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Music That’s Makin Me Feel Good Right Now Series” “Ready To Start” by #Arcade Fire. You know how I told ya that I drive around Mulholland and blast my music… well this is one of those I blast there and just about everywhere I can. I doubt the lyrics are about love, but it’s about a relationship- romantic or not. And for me there are some words in here that are just so empowering. I love these guys. It was hard to pick just one song from their indie smash album, The Suburbs, will post another one shortly.

Art via renklerinsavasi reblogged from coldworldkid- I chose this image because it reminds me of a fresh start, an open road to endless possibilities, and as I’m on a journey to self re-discovery, it spoke volumes to me. Hope you like.

“If the businessmen drink my blood
Like the kids in art school said they would
Then I guess I’ll just begin again
You say, “can we still be friends?”

If I was scared… I would
And if I was bored… you know I would
And if I was yours… but I’m not

Now you’re knocking at my door
Saying please come out with us tonight
But I would rather be alone
Than pretend I feel alright

Now I’m ready to start
I would rather be wrong
Than live in the shadows of your song
My mind is open wide
And now I’m ready to start

Now I’m ready to start
My mind is open wide
And now I’m ready to start
And I’m sure you opened the door
To step out into the dark

Now I’m ready”

“Haven’s Happenstance: The Music That’s Makin Me Feel Good Right Now” song series: Because music has the power to change our mood, lift our spirit and even inspire us, I’m dedicating this song series to the music that’s making me feel good right now, and which does just all those things for me. Some new, some indie, some classics - but one thing’s certain, you will feel good listening to these.

To write it all away

Ever feel so sad your whole face just feels pulled down? Your gaze too heavy and somber to look up or to bear eye contact with anyone who at first glance you know you will just break down? Yeah. I’m having a bad night : (. I want to write. Write it all out. Write and write and write it away. There’s so much that I want to say. To get out, document, record and finally put away. It’s going to be a long night. There are hundreds of poems in my head - dissertations to dish out in lieu of rest. Too many words to make sense of, and yet they all feel so comfortably misplaced. And so the writing begins…

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Storyteller Series:” “White Rabbit” by #Jefferson Airplane. Art by http://blindsalida.fr/ via curioos.tumblr.com

Alright, alright, let’s lighten things up again. One of the coolest bands from the 60’s/Woodstock era, Jefferson Airplane, re-tells the classic story of Alice In Wonderland in true psychedelic form -one that could probably only be achieved through some serious drug cocktails mightily potent at the time. But, ooh listen and feel it, don’t it sound like a good time?

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Storyteller Series:” “Ten Cent Pistol” by The Black Keys. Art by Christel Bangsgaard via ssdmmfr.tumblr.com

I‘m a little late on the song of the day today… But, it’s still Thursday in some parts of the world, so here it goes. After a few emotional storytelling songs, and my own little panic attack at work today, I thought I’d lighten things up and profile the cool cat sounds of The Black Keys. Ten Cent Pistol warns us not to mess with a scorned woman, and reminds us how sweet revenge can indeed be… ahh I can taste it, yes I can…

“Well, he ran around
Late at night
Holding hands
And making light
Of everything
That came before
But there she was
Behind the door

She hit them with her ten cent pistol
Because they ruined her name
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
And they’ve never been the same

There’s nothing worse
In this world
Than payback from a
Jealous girl
The laws of man
Don’t apply
When blood gets in
A woman’s eye

Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
Because they ruined her name
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
And they’ve never been the same

Stars did fall
Thunder rolled
Bugs crawled back
In their holes
The couple screamed
But far too late
Cause a jealous heart
Did retaliate”

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Storyteller Series:” “The Way” by Fastball.  Art ”Sand Fence,” Keeler, California, 1948 by Ansel Adams via me3zzaluna.tumblr.com.

A song about hope or hopelessness? Whichever way you see it, this couple takes destiny into their own hands and together embark on a journey of a lifetime- even if it leads to their lives’ end. The guys in Fastball have said this was inspired by a story in their local paper. I often wish I could pack up and go, even if for a few months. Don’t be surprised if I do, it’s in the works ; ) - my next big adventure.

“Haven’s Happenstance: The Storyteller Series”

This week I profile songs that tell stories — stories of love, death, crime, luck. What does this have to do with love, which I normally write about, you ask? Well, everything: The quickest way to my heart is through a good story. I love to tell stories (and am lucky that I get to do so as part of my job.) But, more than anything I love to hear a good story told.

Something magical happens when someone opens up and tells you a story about their childhood, their first love, their failures, their parents and so on. Sharing, relating, connecting and bonding – stories do this for us, and what most essential ingredient for growing relationships than that.

Through the week I’ll post some of my favorites, and as always expect lots of variety.  Country songs are the best at storytelling, but that’s one genre I’m still catching up on, so if you’ve got some suggestions, please drop me a line.

Lastly, I added a nifty “Streampad” widget to my blog which plays all my audio posts as a playlist in one click, sadly it doesn’t play videos, but check it out at the bottom of the page.

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Departing Series:” “In The New Year” by The #Walkmen. Art via niiaito.tumblr.com

As “The Departing Series” comes to an end, let’s finish it how it started: with the unique and heartfelt sounds of The Walkmen. I began my year with this song, January 1st with my coffee and slippers, blasting it super loud. A song about looking forward; knowing what you left behind and braving through- as friends and loved ones asked, and your cluttered self just felt a mess…

“Oh I’m still living
at the old address

and I’m waiting on the weather
that i know will pass

I know that its true
it’s gonna be a good year
outta the darkness
and into the fire

I tell you I love you
and my heart’s in the strangest place
that’s how it started
and that’s how it ends

and I know you’re with me
It’s a point of pride
and it’s louder than lightning
in this room of mine

Oh I’m just like you
I never hear the bad news
and I never will
We won by a landslide

Our troubles are over
my sisters are married
to all my friends
yeah, that’s how it started

you took your sweet time
and I waited by without complaint
till all the pipe dreams
made me insane

So it’s all over
it’s all over anyhow
you took your sweet time
finally I opened my eyes

My friends and my family
They all ask me one thing
how long will you ramble?
how long will you still stay with me?

The snow is still falling
and I’m almost home
I’ll see you in the new year”

“Haven’s Happenstance: The Departing Series:” This week I continue my exploration of all facets of love and relationships, and am dedicating it to departing, breaking-up, the moments when we realize it’s best we go our separate ways- for good, forever, be gone.

Scarecrow

I used to put a scarecrow
Out in the front porch
Seasonal wreaths year-round
One made of pastel-colored eggs for Easter
Until you went and fucked me up

Recipes in binders
Where intentions were daily reminders
Of the life I thought I had
As you crept behind my back

Scarecrow collecting dust
Garage filling up with exhaust
And a year of empty promises
An equally empty bed
Unbeknownst to me, the pariah I had wed

Poinsettias changing colors
My faith in us wouldn’t falter
But the missing pieces were adding up
You on a downward spiral
Until it all became corrupt

A Thanksgiving dinner with no chatter
But, the silence was as loud as your conscience
It all wore on me like a noose
But, to hear you tell it now
It’s all one big fabricated excuse

It’s about that time again for the scarecrow
So much has changed
I see his hat peeking through the bag
Next to the wreaths I didn’t put up
Domesticity seems so irrelevant now

But, at least you’re gone

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” song “The Sexy Series”: “As the Rush Comes” by Motorcycle; Art by unknown.
One of the sexiest club songs in a long time. From 2004, this extended play version is long enough for some real good fun. (There are 2 versions of this song that I love: this one which is more clubby and perfect for a certain kind of sexy, and another which is a bit more sensual, slower, but just as perfect depending on your mood. I’ll post the other later this week)

“Traveling somewhere
could be anywhere
there’s a coldness in the air
but I don’t care
we drift deeper
life goes on

we drift deeper
into the sound
Feeling strong,
So bring it on

Embrace me…surround me.. as the rush comes”

Sexy. Sex. Love. Romance. Lust. F. Whatever gets you in the mood. This week “Haven’s Happenstance” photo/video song series takes a departure from the more emotional fare and explores some of the sexiest music (according to my mind and hormones :). Over the week I’ll post some sexy tunes to make love to, some to tease to, some about sex, some that make you just want to get some and such… don’t blush…

Let’s Frolic

Hello new,
Come frolic
With me already

Disarm the warnings
Forgo the rational
Let’s play

Off riding
Off we go
Off you
Off me
Let’s go

Come frolic
No worries
No plans
No matter
Just play

Have fun
Have me
Have at it
Let’s go
And frolic

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” song: How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths; Art by Su Blackwell via ilikeartalot

“There’s a club, if you’d like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry

And you want to die

When you say it’s gonna happen “now”
Well, when exactly do you mean?
See I’ve already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth…”
