Hello my #Tumblr #friends, thanks for your messages, I’m better. Had a little bump in the road, but it was a good test in this positive momentum of mine.
In the last few weeks, I’ve had some good lessons about people, and I’m starting to realize that, for the most part, I don’t think we set out to hurt each other. Rather, it’s in the manner in which we carry out our situations – sometimes more careless than not – that people get hurt. And what many of us don’t realize is that it is never, ever too late to reach out to that person that you hurt, that is confused by your actions or simply misunderstood and tell them that you value them – whether it’s the short amount of time you spent together laughing, whether it’s their good intentions or just the fact that they will be good at or with someone or something else. The end result here is: positivity. Leaving things on a positive note.
Let’s not let people walk out of our lives feeling crummy. It’s the one super power we all have – to make others feel respected, valued, thought of, noticed, acknowledged. It’s so simple and can be done with a sincere, ‘I wish you the best, you’re a good person.’ And so with that comes my new Haven’s Happenstance song series – Songs With A Message: over the week I’ll profile songs that have a positive, feel good message to them. Songs that somehow have been surrounding me for the last few weeks – whether I heard them at a café in Italy as I was having a bummed out moment, or they came on the radio as I was tearing up on a drive home, or songs that are just in my arsenal of “Come on Haven, get on up and feel good. Life is short, but oh so beautiful, don’t waste a second of it.” Hope you like, chin up, xo – haven.

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance song: The Women Series,” Tega
n and Sara “The Con.” This awesome Canadian sisters duo goes against the grain and delivers some of the most original and catchy tunes. Mullet hairdos included ; ). Their album “The Con” is probably one of their most widely known, I’ll post their single “Back In Your Head” shortly which was a huge underground hit.

It’s October and it’s also Breast Cancer Awareness month #bcaware. Many a valiant and beautiful women have fallen prey to this disease and many are kick-ass fighting survivors. I’ve had my share of scars and scares, and so on this last week of October, I dedicate my Haven’s Happenstance music series to WOMEN. Celebrating our tender, nurturing, loving side. Our sexy, sultry, ravishing one. And one I’ve had the pleasure to reconnect with recently: our poetic, introspective and sensual one. Throughout the week, I will highlight some of my favorite female artists and bands with brave men strong enough for a woman to front. To women everywhere - you rock!

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Party Series” “Stop” by Jane’s Addiction. This is one of my fav songs to get ready for a night out, makes me wanna jump up & down.
Starting to realize that my series of party songs has an undertone of rebellion and doing what you want, when you want. It started with Ozzie’s Crazy Train, AWK’s Party Hard and this awesome one by Jane’s Addiction - who, by the way, have a new album coming out in October. And I can’t wait. So far the singles they’ve released are just as energetic and upbeat rock as what we’ve come to expect from these 90’s rockers.
Art via hauckandrock - and what better image for a rock party song than a sexy series of high heels ; )
Cool lyrics too, check it out:
“Save the complaints
For a party conversation.
The world is loaded,
It’s lit to pop and nobody is gonna stop…
No one…
No one!
No way!
Gonna stop,
Now; go!
Farm people,
Book wavers, soul savers,
Love preachers!
Lit to pop and nobody is gonna stop.
No one…
One come a day, the water will run,
No man will stand for things that he had done…
Hurrah!”
Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Party Series” (or What’s Makin Haven Feel Even Better Now ;) “#Party Hard” by Andrew W. K. What better song to kick off this series of fun, feel good party songs than with one of the ULTIMATES by the ever always party animal AWK- I love his energy and unapologetic craziness.

And this graphic spoke to me as the perfect image to kick off the party series because it’s a philosophy I believe in. Now more than ever I try to live by it- because life is just too precious, beautiful and short to not do what we want and what makes us happy. Let’s party to that!

Hello my Tumblr friends - sorry I have been MIA. I arrived to London for work, went on a little escapade and I am now refueled and filled-a-plenty with some feel-good good-feeling ‘something, something,’- and that’s about all you’re gettin ;D. BUT, if you know me and know what I write about here at HavenStory, well I think you can venture to say: I am happy for now. And the road to one day
again finding love looks bright- most probably not now and not him, but the possibilities have proven to be, well, fun to get to know.
Enough with the riddles - a Haven’s Happenstance series is overdue and we get started now with: “The Party Series” (or What’s Makin Haven Feel Even Better Now.) Because life is good when you have looked inward, taken a valiant step to get out of a bad situation despite the fact that it may get lonely, but you are surrounded by people that care for you, and the cherry on top is conquering that bucket list that some are too afraid to get started. For 2011, I’m more than halfway mine. Thank goodness ‘cause the year is about to end. I hope you’ve gotten in your groove too, and if not, well bottom’s up to 2012. Cheers! - haven

“The Music That’s Makin Me Feel Good Right Now Series” continues at HavenStory with #Arcade Fire’s “The Sprawl II.” This song is beautiful on so many levels - exceptional lyrics and a gorgeous feel-good melody. Enjoy.
“They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock
These days my life, I feel it has no purpose
But late at night the feelings swim to the surface
‘Cause on the surface the city lights shine
They’re calling at me, come and find your kind
Sometimes I wonder if the world’s so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl
Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there’s no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights
We rode our bikes to the nearest park
Sat under the swings and kissed in the dark
We shield our eyes from the police lights
We run away, but we don’t know why
And like a mirror, the city lights shine
They’re screaming at us, “We don’t need your kind”
Sometimes I wonder if the world’s so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl
Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there’s no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights”
Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Music That’s Makin Me Feel Good Right Now Series” “Ready To Start” by #Arcade Fire. You know how I told ya that I drive around Mulholland and blast my music… well this is one of those I blast there and just about everywhere I can. I doubt the lyrics are about love, but it’s about a relationship- romantic or not. And for me there are some words in here that are just so empowering. I love these guys. It was hard to pick just one song from their indie smash album, The Suburbs, will post another one shortly.
Art via renklerinsavasi reblogged from coldworldkid- I chose this image because it reminds me of a fresh start, an open road to endless possibilities, and as I’m on a journey to self re-discovery, it spoke volumes to me. Hope you like.
“If the businessmen drink my blood
Like the kids in art school said they would
Then I guess I’ll just begin again
You say, “can we still be friends?”
If I was scared… I would
And if I was bored… you know I would
And if I was yours… but I’m not
Now you’re knocking at my door
Saying please come out with us tonight
But I would rather be alone
Than pretend I feel alright
Now I’m ready to start
I would rather be wrong
Than live in the shadows of your song
My mind is open wide
And now I’m ready to start
Now I’m ready to start
My mind is open wide
And now I’m ready to start
And I’m sure you opened the door
To step out into the dark
Now I’m ready”
“Haven’s Happenstance: The Music That’s Makin Me Feel Good Right Now” song series: Because music has the power to change our mood, lift our spirit and even inspire us, I’m dedicating this song series to the music that’s making me feel good right now, and which does just all those things for me. Some new, some indie, some classics - but one thing’s certain, you will feel good listening to these.
Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Music That’s Makin Me Feel Good Right Now Series” “New Slang” by The #Shins. So I begin my whirlwind European adventure this Thursday - a week and a half in London for work, then 3 weeks vacation throughout Europe - plus I also squeezed in a secret getaway that came together just this week. I’m so giddy, I’m going to explode at the seams. So, The Shins and this song put me in the best mood. Remember my series highlighting oldies? These guys totally capture that 60’s vibe, that free spirit, love for all sentiment. It also reminds me of Fleet Foxes. Dig.
Art “Machu Picchu” (by ∑ƒ∆) via black-wolves. I chose this image because it’s a shot I like to take of myself when I travel, and I plan to plop down in front of as many landscapes for a self portrait- except I usually kick my feet up in the air and click away;)

Everything But The Girl, “Before Today.” “The Music That’s Makin Me Feel Good Right Now” series continues at HavenStory. You know when you’re into someone, you’re attracted, intrigued, want to get to know them a little better, you wonder what it’d be like to kiss, but everything about the situation is… well, not right? Yeah… me neither…
The lyrics in “Before Today” take us to the moment when we say screw it, this is what I want, couple that with a sexy beat and I surrender.

I don’t want excuses
I don’t want your smiles
I don’t want to feel like we’re apart a thousand miles
I don’t want your attitude
I don’t want your things
But I don’t want a phone that never rings
I want your love and I want it now
I want your love and I want it now
I don’t want your history
I don’t want that stuff
I want you to shut your mouth
That would be enough
I don’t care if you’ve been here before
You don’t understand
Tonight I feel above the law, I’m coming into land
I want your love and I want it now
I want your love and I want it now
My heart is that much harder now
That’s what I thought before today
My heart is that much harder now
I thought that it would stay that way, before today
Let’s kick off “Haven’s Happenstance” #song series with the chill sounds of Thievery Corp’s “The Richest Man In Babylon.” Thanks to my poet pal enjio for tipping me off to 8tracks, I’m now learning how to make my own playlists, keep an eye for those soon!

I’m about to travel for a month to #Europe and I am beyond elated. I was pretty down this past week, and I gave myself a pep talk, 6 countries, 11 cities- a trip that’s been on the bucket list for years, WTF, get on up and out of this funk. And so I did, but what helped too was the music with which I surrounded myself.

What music gets you in a good mood?
Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Soothing Oldies Series:” “Twilight Time” by The #Platters.
What better way to start off “The Soothing Oldies Series” than with probably my favorite #oldies group, The Platters, who have extraordinarily embodied the sounds of the 50’s - not only through the lead singer’s remarkable tone and voice, but the layered melodies and harmonies which are some of the sweetest sounds I’ve ever heard.
“Haven’s Happenstance: The Soothing Oldies Series:” There are no sad songs, really, only the way we feel when we seek certain songs to soothe our soul. This week as this ‘Love-Starved’ feeling continues, I bring you “The Soothing Oldies Series,” because for me every time I hear a good diddy from the 50’s or 60’s, well, I feel like I’m getting a soothing hug from an old friend.

This week I profile songs that tell stories — stories of love, death, crime, luck. What does this have to do with love, which I normally write about, you ask? Well, everything: The quickest way to my heart is through a good story. I love to tell stories (and am lucky that I get to do so as part of my job.) But, more than anything I love to hear a good story told.
Something magical happens when someone opens up and tells you a story about their childhood, their first love, their failures, their parents and so on. Sharing, relating, connecting and bonding – stories do this for us, and what most essential ingredient for growing relationships than that.
Through the week I’ll post some of my favorites, and as always expect lots of variety. Country songs are the best at storytelling, but that’s one genre I’m still catching up on, so if you’ve got some suggestions, please drop me a line.
Lastly, I added a nifty “Streampad” widget to my blog which plays all my audio posts as a playlist in one click, sadly it doesn’t play videos, but check it out at the bottom of the page.
kisses

Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Departing Series:” “In The New Year” by The #Walkmen. Art via niiaito.tumblr.com
As “The Departing Series” comes to an end, let’s finish it how it started: with the unique and heartfelt sounds of The Walkmen. I began my year with this song, January 1st with my coffee and slippers, blasting it super loud. A song about looking forward; knowing what you left behind and braving through- as friends and loved ones asked, and your cluttered self just felt a mess…
“Oh I’m still living
at the old address
and I’m waiting on the weather
that i know will pass
I know that its true
it’s gonna be a good year
outta the darkness
and into the fire
I tell you I love you
and my heart’s in the strangest place
that’s how it started
and that’s how it ends
and I know you’re with me
It’s a point of pride
and it’s louder than lightning
in this room of mine
Oh I’m just like you
I never hear the bad news
and I never will
We won by a landslide
Our troubles are over
my sisters are married
to all my friends
yeah, that’s how it started
you took your sweet time
and I waited by without complaint
till all the pipe dreams
made me insane
So it’s all over
it’s all over anyhow
you took your sweet time
finally I opened my eyes
My friends and my family
They all ask me one thing
how long will you ramble?
how long will you still stay with me?
The snow is still falling
and I’m almost home
I’ll see you in the new year”
“Haven’s Happenstance: The Departing Series:” This week I continue my exploration of all facets of love and relationships, and am dedicating it to departing, breaking-up, the moments when we realize it’s best we go our separate ways- for good, forever, be gone.
