Today’s “Haven’s Happenstance” #song - “The Storyteller Series:” “Ten Cent Pistol” by The Black Keys. Art by Christel Bangsgaard via ssdmmfr.tumblr.com
I
‘m a little late on the song of the day today… But, it’s still Thursday in some parts of the world, so here it goes. After a few emotional storytelling songs, and my own little panic attack at work today, I thought I’d lighten things up and profile the cool cat sounds of The Black Keys. Ten Cent Pistol warns us not to mess with a scorned woman, and reminds us how sweet revenge can indeed be… ahh I can taste it, yes I can…
“Well, he ran around
Late at night
Holding hands
And making light
Of everything
That came before
But there she was
Behind the door
She hit them with her ten cent pistol
Because they ruined her name
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
And they’ve never been the same
There’s nothing worse
In this world
Than payback from a
Jealous girl
The laws of man
Don’t apply
When blood gets in
A woman’s eye
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
Because they ruined her name
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
And they’ve never been the same
Stars did fall
Thunder rolled
Bugs crawled back
In their holes
The couple screamed
But far too late
Cause a jealous heart
Did retaliate”
“Haven’s Happenstance: The Storyteller Series:” This week I profile songs that tell stories of love, death, crime, luck. What does this have to do with love, which I normally write about, you ask? Well, everything: The quickest way to my heart is through a good story.

A song about hope or hopelessness? Whichever way you see it, this couple takes destiny into their own hands and together embark on a journey of a lifetime- even if it leads to their lives’ end. The guys in Fastball have said this was inspired by a story in their local paper. I often wish I could pack up and go, even if for a few months. Don’t be surprised if I do, it’s in the works ; ) - my next big adventure.

To kick off “The Storyteller Series,” a rap song about life in the hood which resonates all too well with me as I grew up in South Central L.A. witnessing the riots first-hand. But, that’s not nearly the worst thing I saw or felt. I have stories, many stories to tell. Every now and then I find a brave soul who is genuinely interested in hearing them. And the magic happens: they begin to tell their stories and we connect. So whether in Missoula or Madeira, it’s your story, tell it.

Something magical happens when someone opens up and tells you a story about their childhood, their first love, their failures, their parents… Sharing, relating, connecting and bonding – stories do this for us, and what most essential ingredient for growing relationships than that.

This week I profile songs that tell stories — stories of love, death, crime, luck. What does this have to do with love, which I normally write about, you ask? Well, everything: The quickest way to my heart is through a good story. I love to tell stories (and am lucky that I get to do so as part of my job.) But, more than anything I love to hear a good story told.

Through the week I’ll post some of my favorites, and as always expect lots of variety. Country songs are the best at storytelling, but that’s one genre I’m still catching up on, so if you’ve got some suggestions, please drop me a line.
Lastly, I added a nifty “Streampad” widget to my blog which plays all my audio posts as a playlist in one click, sadly it doesn’t play videos, but check it out at the bottom of the page.

When done right, song covers are like a second life, bringing back something incredible. As I use music in this blog to reflect on love’s lies and contemplate second chances, it seemed perfectly fitting to take a closer look at covers.
What Jeff Buckley did with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallellujah,” was just genius. Johnny Cash’s American IV: The Man Comes Around is undeniably brilliant. Yet, there are others I’m just not into, like Mary J Blige’s “One” U2 (maybe because I’m the only person I know that doesn’t really like “One,” sorry.)
But, don’t get me wrong; it’s a gutsy thing to do. Fascinating - to bring back a song that was cool a decade or so ago. Where else can this be done? Fashion reinterprets trends often (i.e. 90’s fashion is back- working on a music post about that, sans the denim overalls though :) And filmmakers remake classics - much to the chagrin of critics. Ah but song covers, great ones, are like having dessert twice. So, let’s skip to the whipped cream, here are some of my favorites in alpha order. Yours?
Ryan Adams – Wonderwall (Oasis) I think I’m obsessed with Ryan. Just found out he’s touring in Europe a month before I’ll be there, bummer.
